More than $1 million is being invested into researching ways to treat skin conditions and improve the health of children in Western Australia's Kimberley region.
A partnership between the Kimberley Aboriginal Health Planning Forum and researchers from the Telethon Kids Institute is being funded for three years with $1.05 million provided through the FutureHealth WA program.
The study will look into preventable skin infections such as impetigo, or 'school sores', scabies and crusted scabies which are major problems in remote Aboriginal communities and is part of the broader skin health program already under way in the Kimberley.
Prompt and effective treatment of these common conditions can prevent serious health complications such as chronic kidney disease and even rheumatic heart disease.
