The first patient transferred to the new hospital – 84 year old Margery Short
After months of preparation St John of God Midland Public Hospital has opened its doors to patients at the same time as Swan District Hospital closed.
The new hospital opened at 7am on Tuesday 24 November with about 80 patients being moved from Swan District Hospital throughout the day.
Premier Colin Barnett officially opened the hospital at a function on Friday 20 November at which guests were treated to performances from the Governor Stirling Senior High School guitar ensemble and the Holy Cross College choir.
A foundation plaque was unveiled by Premier Barnett, Health Minister Kim Hames, Assistant Federal Minister for Health Ken Wyatt, St John of God Health Care Chairman Tony Howarth and Chairman of Trustees Eva Skira.
Located on Clayton Street in the historic Railway Workshops precinct, the $360 million project was jointly funded by the State and Federal governments and delivered under a public-private partnership with St John of God Health Care.
The hospital features a significantly expanded emergency department and new intensive care, high dependency and coronary units free of charge to public patients.
Additionally, the hospital will provide larger maternity, general surgery, mental health and rehabilitation facilities and new cancer services.
