Diabetes and obesity in Aboriginal children were the topics for discussion on a new radio segment on Noongar Radio (external site) involving experts from WA Health.
Health Matters, on radio 100.9fm, airs fortnightly from 11am to noon on Wednesdays and repeated on Sunday nights, is a segment that tackles contemporary health issues for Aboriginal people.
Leah Bonson, Director of Aboriginal Health with Child and Adolescent Health Service, led a team from Princess Margaret Hospital to answer questions and provide advice about diabetes and obesity among Aboriginal children.
She was joined by experts Mark Shah (nurse practitioner in diabetes care), Luise Russell (clinical nurse and researcher) and Alana Loo (senior Aboriginal liaison and support officer).
The next radio segment, to be broadcast Wednesday 6 April, will deal with how to improve health by quitting smoking, and involves experts Dishan Weerasooriya (principal policy officer, Tobacco Policy Team, Department of Health), Stacey Child (Manager, Alcohol and Drug Support Service, Mental Health Commission) and Louise De Busch, (Aboriginal Projects Officer, Cancer Council of WA).
