Clinical Coding Policy - No Longer Applicable – Superseded by MP 0164/21 – 1 July 2021

Applicable to: This policy is applicable to relevant staff with the clinical coding area of health service providers and relevant contracted health entities required to provide admitted care data to the Hospital Morbidity Data Collection.

Description: Health data collected by the WA health system is subject to national reporting requirements. The WA health system is therefore required to code admitted care in accordance with these requirements and must use the current version of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Australian Modification; Australian Classification of Health Interventions; and Australian Coding Standards (ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS).

The Clinical Coding Policy has been developed to promote and ensure the production of high quality coded data by health service providers (HSPs) and relevant contracted health entities (CHEs). In addition, the policy aims to outline requirements that apply to clinical coders in the WA health system, beyond those that are specified in National classification schemes and standards.

Date of effect: 01 July 2017 to 30 June 2019
