Radiation Safety

Applicable to: Medical Staff

Description: The aim of this Operational Directive is to ensure that all medical personnel employed by the Department of Health, Metropolitan Health Services, WA Country Health Service & Peel Health Service have completed the radiation safety module and test.

Radiation Safety

This Operational Directive only applies to medical staff.

BACKGROUND

There has been growing concern both nationally and internationally about the increasing exposure to ionizing radiation from diagnostic imaging and its potential long term health effects. The Western Australian (WA) Department of Health (DOH) has been investigating the options for improving the education of clinicians about ionizing radiation. An online radiation safety education module and assessment have been developed by staff from the University of Western Australia and DOH.

AIM

The aim of this Operational Directive is to ensure that all medical personnel employed by the following entities:

  • Department of Health
  • Metropolitan Health Services
  • WA Country Health Service
  • Peel Health Service

have completed the radiation safety module and test and are aware of the health effects of ionizing radiation.

RADIATION SAFETY MODULE AND TEST

These are available on the internet at: http://www.imagingpathways.health.wa.gov.au/. The education module and assessment take approximately 30 minutes to complete and each user can have multiple attempts to complete the test.  The test results are notified to the user immediately, following which they can print out a certificate attesting to their success.

The details (name and e-mail address) of successful candidates are then automatically entered into a secure database maintained by ImagingWest and accessible to Clinical Services administrative staff within each hospital and health service.

NEW EMPLOYEES

Successful completion of the education module and assessment will be required for all junior medical staff commencing employment from 2014 onwards.

Health Corporate Network

Health Corporate Network will ensure that all job application packages for junior medical jobs at the WA DOH include the employment requirement of successful completion of the module and assessment.

Clinical Services

Clinical Services departments at each hospital site will ensure that all new junior medical staff have successfully completed the module and assessment prior to commencement of employment by ensuring that successful applicants for employment are listed on the secure database.

EXISTING EMPLOYEES

Existing employees will be informed of the existence and aims of the module and encouraged to complete the module and test as part of continuing professional development.
