Guidelines for human biobanks, genetic research databases and associated data

The ‘Guidelines for human biobanks, genetic research databases and associated data’ (The Guidelines) provide a set of principles and best practices to guide researchers and clinicians involved with biobanks in Western Australia.

The Guidelines address the establishment, governance, oversight, custodianship, terms for participation, protection of and access to samples and data, personnel requirements and discontinuation of the biobank.

The Guidelines apply to all biobanks within the custodianship, or held under the auspices of WA Health. This includes but is not restricted to biobanks:

  • established through collaborations between WA Health and universities or research institutes;
  • established by investigators with joint appointments between WA Health and universities or research institutions;
  • established using samples and/or information obtained from WA Health patients;
  • established with funding in part or in full from WA Health; and
  • for which researchers wish to link the biobank’s data with the WA Health data collections.

It is the responsibility of all WA Health staff who are biobank custodians to ensure all staff are aware of and have access to a copy of The Guidelines which can be found at http://www.genomics.health.wa.gov.au/home/index.cfm.

The Guidelines have been developed in collaboration with stakeholders across WA Health, and independent researchers from all the research institutes in WA. In accordance with the WA Health ‘Consumer, Carer and Community Engagement Framework 2007’ health consumers and members of the public were included in the development of The Guidelines.

All enquires regarding The Guidelines should be directed to the Office of Population Health Genomics on email genomics@health.wa.gov.au or by phone on 9222 6888.
