Funding Initiatives for mosquito management in Western Australia (FIMMWA)

Purpose

In 2013, the Minister for Health committed additional funding for four years (2013-2017) to enhance mosquito management across Western Australia (WA), for the benefit of public health. The funding initiative for mosquito management in Western Australia (FIMMWA) was established in response to this commitment. Over the life of the initiative, funding was allocated towards assistance and build capacity in Local Government (LG) mosquito management programs, for key capacity building projects and to establish a competitive research grant scheme. The 4-year funding period ended on 30 June 2017.

Evaluation

A rigorous evaluation of FIMMWA was undertaken in mid-2017.The evaluation found that significant corporate knowledge and expertise has been built within both State and local government authorities to deliver risk-based, effective mosquito management programs in those regions of WA at greatest risk from mosquito-borne diseases. This unique opportunity also enhanced WA’s engagement with the National mosquito management agenda, linking the Department of Health’s Medical Entomology team with professional networks and research initiatives around the country. A number of recommendations were also developed from information obtained in the evaluation. These aim to ensure that the increased capacity for mosquito management built under the FIMMWA initiative is maintained into the future. The recommendations are currently being considered by the Department, and will be reported here at a later date.
