Merit Awards

The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) are a major funder of health and medical research in Australia and provide a number of funding opportunities. Competition for funding programs are extremely high. Many high-quality applications do not receive grants due to limited funding being available.

The Merit Award program provides funds to emerging WA researchers whose applications to NHMRC were judged to be ‘fundable but not funded’, in the Early Career, Career Development Fellowship or Project Grant programs. Funds are provided to recipients to undertake activities that will enhance their chances of winning a grant in a future NHMRC application round, bringing more research and funding into WA.

So far there have been six rounds of Merit Awards, which commenced from the 2013 NHMRC funding round. The Merit Award grants are awarded for use in the year following the NHMRC round. Recipients of the Merit Awards can be found at the links below.

So far, $6.95 million has been distributed through the WA Merit Award program, which included support from FutureHealth funding, up to the 2016-2017 round.
