How to apply for an Area of Need

Applicants seeking an Area of Need (AoN) must complete and submit the relevant application form together with the required supporting documentation. There are two types of application forms:

Applications that have been assessed, and have met the Area of Need Assessment Criteria (PDF 370KB), will be provided to the WA Department of Health Chief Medical Officer (Chief Medical Officer) for a decision with a recommended specific length of time, up to a maximum of three years. Applicants will be notified of the outcome in writing. For further application information refer to the Area of Need Application Guide: General Medical Services (PDF 455KB) or Area of Need Application Guide: Specialist Medical Services (PDF 458KB).

Approved AoN decisions are published on the WA Department of Health AoN website as an extract of the database in the Area of Need database report (PDF 44KB) clearly stating the type of medical service, speciality, location, decision number and expiry date. An AoN commences on the date it is approved by the Chief Medical Officer.

Applications can take up to eight weeks to assess and approve from the time a completed application is received.

Due to the time and costs involved in international recruitment, it is recommended that applicants await formal approval for an AoN before recruiting an IMG.

Should an AoN application be unsuccessful, applicants will be advised of the decision in writing. If the applicant is dissatisfied with the decision, the applicant may be eligible to appeal the decision in writing within 28 business days by emailing Further information can be found in the Area of Need Appeals Process (PDF 345KB).
