Innovative Practice

Winner: Graylands Innovative Practice Team

Occupational Therapists (OTs) are an integral part of the multi-disciplinary teams of the Acute Care Service at Graylands Hospital and of the Productive MH Wards initiative. Under the leadership of the Senior Occupational Therapist – Andrew Miller, the team members formed a core group of dedicated team members who have worked tirelessly towards adapting the environment within the hospital wards to be engaging, interactive and provide a sense of community and belonging.

The team has introduced creative environments within the wards, that provide self-directed acitivity options, self-soothing sensory and recovery opportunities, which has enhanced the therapeutic process. Innovative Practice has now extended to the wider mainstream community. The annual Graylands Music Festival and the more Graylands Music Festival and the recent Mandala Sunshine Wall Mural Project – these have been a major platform in integrating inpatients with the community reducing stigma attached to Graylands Hospital.

All members of this team are passionate about contemporary and progressive mental health practices - reducing restrictive practices and facilitating recovery opportunities for patients.
