To provide a reticulated drinking water scheme in Western Australia, compliance with the health-related criteria set out in the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines (external site) must be demonstrated before the service is provided to members of public.
The January 2022 edition (version 3.7) of these guidelines, known as the “Australian Drinking Water Guidelines 2011 – Version 3.7 Updated January 2022,” forms the basis for setting policy on the quality and safety of drinking water supplied in WA and the risk management framework that applies thereto, from 1 January 2023.
To demonstrate compliance with the guidelines, the Department of Health requires drinking water service providers to establish:
- a drinking water quality management plan
- system compliance and reporting processes with Department of Health.
A model of the drinking water quality management plan and ancillary documents are listed below:
Drinking water scheme providers which are required to obtain a licence from the Economic Regulation Authority (ERA) (external site) may be required to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Department of Health.
