Illicit drug contamination

Premises that are used for smoking, growing or manufacturing illicit drugs may pose a potential health risk to current and future occupants. The health risk depends on the type of activity undertaken at the premises.

Premises of concern include:

  • Clandestine laboratory (clan lab): a house, room, covered space, building or outdoor area used to manufacture or ‘cook’ illicit drugs especially methylamphetamine (meth, ice).
  • Illicit drug smoke houses: a residential property used to smoke methylamphetamine (meth) or other illicit drugs, but not manufacture them.
  • Grow houses: a property used to grow an illegal crop of cannabis (marijuana) for sale.

The following webpages provide information and guidance on the notification, risk management and remediation of clan labs, cannabis grow houses and drug smoke houses.
