Management of leprosy

WA Tuberculosis Control Program, Mental Health, Public health and Dental Services, North Metropolitan Health Service.

The WA Tuberculosis Control Program developed a comprehensive guideline for the management of leprosy to optimise outcomes and interrupt transmission.

Western Australia is the state with the highest rates of leprosy and more than half its cases occur in remote areas.

The final guide contained detailed information on the clinical features, diagnostics, management and complications of leprosy. It was tailored to WAs cultural and geographical challenges.

Patient reported change policy

WA Cancer & Palliative Care Network, Clinical Implementation Unit, North Metropolitan Health Service.

The Western Australian Cancer and Palliative Care Network nurse coordination team developed a policy to address Standard 8 of the Australian National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards in the non-acute setting.

Failure to recognise and respond to changes in clinical status is a significant factor for adverse events.

The Cancer Nurse Coordinators service does not provide telephone triage but some encounters necessitate an escalation of care response.
