Fiona Stanley Hospital to act on recommendations from independent review

The Department of Health today released the Review of Operational Clinical and Patient Care at Fiona Stanley Hospital.

WA Health Acting Director General Professor Bryant Stokes said the independent review highlighted areas for improvement around clinical and patient care.

“Patient care is always the top priority and this review will assist Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) management to improve their systems and policies,” Professor Stokes said.

“I have met with the FSH executive team to discuss the issues raised in the report, and been assured that work is underway to implement the recommendations as soon as possible.”

Conducted over a four-week period from 24 April to 22 May 2015, the Review of Operational Clinical and Patient Care at Fiona Stanley Hospital examined the hospital’s processes, systems and practices against best practice and relevant standards.

The review team also looked at the complaints received by the Minister for Health, the Department of Health and FSH since the hospital’s opening.

“Our hospitals take patient complaints very seriously and the complaints reviewed have been discussed with the relevant health teams at the hospital,” Professor Stokes said.

The independent review was undertaken by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care, MMK Consulting and former WA Health Consumer Council Executive Director, Michelle Kosky.

People and organisations consulted during the review included patients and their families/carers, Fiona Stanley Hospital staff, the Australian Medical Association, the Australian Nursing Federation and the Health Consumers Council of WA.

“While I acknowledge that Fiona Stanley Hospital has had its challenges, it is a world class facility, delivering high quality and safe care for the population of Western Australia,” Professor Stokes said.

“I would like to thank the review team for their comprehensive report, which will support FSH in continuing to improve the quality of care and services at the hospital.”
