COVID-19 update – 20 January 2021

The Department of Health has today reported no new cases of COVID-19 in Western Australia. The State’s total remains at 888.

WA Health is monitoring 13 active cases and 866 people have recovered from the virus in WA.

There have been 701,851 COVID-19 tests performed in WA. Of those tested, 110,201 were from regional WA.

Yesterday 1,684 people presented to WA Health-managed COVID clinics – 1,663 were assessed and swabbed.

To date eight cases of variant strains have been detected. Of these cases, six are the UK variant strain and two are the South African variant strain.

Note: The cases of variant strains reported above are not new cases. Genome sequencing – to define the strain of the virus – is a separate laboratory process carried out after someone who has travelled from a high risk area (currently the UK and South Africa) tests positive to COVID-19. All cases, regardless of strain, are managed by WA’s public health experts.
