Important information

  • Infectious agent: Klebsiella granulomatis Gram-negative bacillus.
  • Transmission: Donovanosis is passed on by direct contact with lesions, usually during unprotected vaginal or anal sex (less commonly by oral sex) with an infected person.
  • Incubation period: Usually from 1 to 16 weeks.
  • Infectious period: For the duration of open lesions.
  • Case exclusion: Do not exclude.
  • Contact exclusion: Do not exclude.
  • Treatment: Antibiotic treatment as recommended by the Guidelines for Managing Sexually Transmitted Infections – WA Silver book – Donovanosis (granuloma inguinale).
  • Immunisation: None available.
  • Case follow-up: Is the responsibility of health care providers.
