Western Australian teenagers on summer holidays are being encouraged to take time to Get the Facts – about puberty, their sexual health and staying safe in relationships.
The Department of Health’s Get the Facts videos (external site) videos are aimed at 13 to 17-year-olds and uses comedy to talk to teens about important topics such as sexting and pornography.
The Department’s Sexual Health and Blood-borne Virus Program Manager Lisa Bastian said the Get the Facts campaign aimed to help young people manage expectations, deal with puberty and normalise conversations about sex, respectful relationships, sexual health and puberty.
“More than ever, teenagers are exposed to sexting, porn and unrealistic imagery through social media and their smart phones,” she said.
“Teenagers who can speak to each other and their parents about sex and puberty are more likely to delay becoming sexually active and less likely to experience an unplanned pregnancy or get a sexually transmitted infection (STI).”
The videos feature young people in amusing scenarios who then share their opinions and experiences, offer advice and provide options for teens who are looking for help or advice.
