'Do I need the ED?' alternatives to emergency campaign

This campaign aims to promote alternative health care options for minor injuries or illnesses and to reinforce that Western Australia’s public hospital emergency departments (EDs) are for emergencies.

Objectives
  • Increase awareness of the alternatives to ED services and how to access them
  • Increase awareness on healthcare options most appropriate for a person’s medical condition or illness
  • Educate the community about its role in the responsible use of EDs.
Key messages

1. If it’s not an emergency, is the ED where you need to be?
2. Every day, Western Australians go to the emergency department for illnesses and injuries. But many don't need to be there.
3. If it's not an emergency:

  • Contact your GP
  • Visit a pharmacy for advice
  • Call healthdirect on 1800 022 222.

4. To find alternatives to emergency, search 'healthcare options'.
