Renal mass – Adult

Emergency and immediate referrals

Referral to Emergency Department

If any of the following are present or suspected, please refer the patient to the emergency department (via ambulance if necessary) or seek emergency medical advice if in a remote region:

  • Nil

Immediately contact on-call registrar or service to arrange an immediate urology assessment (seen within 7 days) for:

  • Renal malignancy confirmed

Presenting issues
  • With or without bleeding (incidentally seen on imaging)
  • Solid or complex renal mass
  • Renal parenchymal mass
  • Large angiomyolipoma (benign)
  • Intra collecting system lesion
  • Complex cystic lesion
  • Large symptomatic renal cyst (generally >10 cm)
Mandatory Referral information (referral will be returned if this information is not included) )

Investigations

  • FBC
  • U&Es
  • LFTs
  • Calcium
  • Urinary tract USS, renal USS or contrast abdominal CT (i.e. CT IVP)

If unable to attach reports, please include relevant information/findings in the body of the referral   

Referrer to state reason if not able to include mandatory information in referral (e.g. patient unable to access test due to geographical location or financial cost)

  • Urine cytology results
  • Staging CT scan of the chest

Appointment within 30 days
  • Imaging showing any of the following:
    • solid renal mass ≥ 4 cm
    • intra collecting system lesion
    • complex cystic lesion ≥ 4cm in size
Category 2
Appointment within 90 days
  • Imaging showing any of the following:
    • solid or complex cystic renal mass < 4 cm without evidence of metastatic disease
    • angiomyolipoma ≥ 4cm
    • angiomyolipoma < 4cm in a woman of child bearing age
    • large symptomatic simple renal cyst
Category 3
Appointment within 365 days
  • No defined category 3 criteria

Referral to public adult urology outpatient services is not routinely accepted for the following conditions:
