Evaluation of Cancers and Other Health Conditions among residents of the Shire of Murray, Western Australia

21 August 2023

In response to a request from the local community, the Department of Health Western Australia carried out an evaluation to assess the likelihood of a cancer cluster amongst residents of the Shire of Murray. The investigation was based on the Guidelines for the Investigation of Cancer Clusters in Western Australia (PDF 1.2MB).

Additional epidemiological analyses were also conducted to evaluate if there were elevated rates of certain non-cancer conditions, namely asthma, other chronic respiratory diseases and chronic kidney diseases.

The report assessed health data from 2001 to 2020 and found no clear or consistent evidence to support the presence of a potential cancer cluster in the Shire of Murray. The evaluation also did not find evidence of an increase in other non-cancer conditions.
