Because of Her, We Can

To celebrate the 2018 NAIDOC Week theme of ‘Because of Her We Can’ we honour Aboriginal nurses and midwives Western Australia and the amazing work they do.

If you ever wanted to hear a story of triumph over adversity, look no further than 2018 HESTA Nurse of the Year, Gail Yarran. Her genuine warmth and compassion belies the pain of lifelong bullying and racism. Read Gail's story (PDF 716KB)

Melanie Robinson, Acting Director of Aboriginal Health at the Child and Adolescent Health Service, is solid. She has studied hard, pushed herself out of her comfort zone, explored a varied career path and loves her country. Read Melanie's story (PDF 595KB)

It seems somehow fitting that Professor Rhonda Marriott pays homage to her mother at the start of our interview, given that the 2018 NAIDOC Week theme is ‘Because of Her, We Can’. Read Rhonda's story (PDF 632KB)

Shari Pilkington grew up knowing that her Grandmother Doris had written a biographical book on her Great-Grandmother Molly. It was only when she became a mother herself that she realised the importance of that book and what it really meant for children to be separated from their parents. Read Shari's story (PDF 595KB)
