PMH celebrates its 107th birthday

Princess Margaret Hospital celebrated its 107th birthday with a party for patients, families and staff.

In 1909, the hospital which was first named Perth Children’s Hospital, opened as a 20-bed facility with one operating theatre. The hospital changed its name to Princess Margaret Hospital in 1949, and today is an internationally recognised paediatric facility with 220-beds, treating approximately 250,000 children and adolescents each year.

Throughout its history PMH has led the way in a variety of medical practices. In the 1940s the hospital became a world leader in treating conditions like cleft lip and palate, and today a number of surgical, paediatric medicine and mental health services are renowned.

To celebrate the occasion patients at PMH received treats from PMH Foundation volunteers and took part in party themed activities in the PMH Megazone. Sporting guests from West Coast Fever and Perth Glory joined in the festivities, and staff, many in fancy dress, enjoyed cake and coffee at a party in the Megazone.

Minister for Health, The Hon John Day, MLA; CAHS Chief Executive, Professor Frank Daly and CAHS Board Chair, Debbie Karasinski shared cake cutting duties with PMH patient Lexi Blackburn and her mum Sinead Campion.

The birthday event was funded by PMH Foundation, the hospital’s main fundraiser, as part of a program of activities to commemorate the hospital’s achievements and milestones.
